Moses went up the mountain to meet God, Israelites wandered in the parched desert far from Him, for forty years no less. Moses' experience was vertical, theirs horizontal. His encounter involved risk and mystery, theirs was safe and familiar. Moses was terrified yet thrilled beyond belief, they were comfortable but eventually bored - why else would you go gaga over a metal calf? I guess we'll invariably bow down to something. Choices, choices.
